Fort Worth Alliance for Responsible Development (FORWARD)
Welcome to the FORWARD History Page
FORWARD was launched by concerned citizens who
joined together to slow the rush to build a new superhighway
(State Highway 121 Tollway) in Fort Worth.
Issues including the harm that such highways have done to Fort Worth and other urban areas
led to an effort to stop the construction as proposed.
Not a group of anti-highway or anti-growth zealots, the people involved included
realtors, developers, engineers, and others often associated with growth, technology, and development.
What united these people was the realization that Fort Worth was in a position to either
- speed down the road of unfettered, sprawling development, (like so many other sun-belt cities) or
- grow with some good planning to continue as an attractive and livable city.
The highway issue served to bring the people together,
but interests in
- urban redevelopment
- smart growth
- mass transit
- other "healthy urban" issues
led to the formation of this alliance.
